Crochet Owl Pattern...

I loved making the owl in my last post. When I saw the picture of it on Pinterest, I knew I wanted to make a few. But after searching for who posted the original picture, there was no pattern to be found. So, I decided to sit down and try to figure it out on my own. When I had requests for a pattern, well, I must say that I was very happy. So, to the best of my ability, I wrote down a pattern. Now, please keep in mind that I have never written a crochet pattern before. I really hope you enjoy making this little owl as much as I did.

{hugs}
Laura

I used Sugar and Cream cotton yarn with a H/8 - 5 mm crochet hook. I also crochet very tightly.
Start with a magic ring and hook 6 single crochet into it. Then, pull it tight and slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. This is your first round.
Second Round - Chain one and then hook 2 single crochets in each stitch. Slip stitch into the chain one to join.
Third Round - Change colors and then chain two. Hook a single crochet in the first stitch and then chain one. Single crochet in the next stitch and then chain one. Repeat until you get to the end of the round and slip stitch into the second chain of the chain two.
Fourth Round - Change colors and chain one. Double crochet in the chain one space and single crochet in the single crochet stitch, repeating this until you get to the end of the round and slip stitch into the chain one.

Fifth Round - Chain two and double crochet into the same space. Then hook two double crochets into the next stitch, one single crochet into the next three stitches and then two double crochets in the next two stitches. At the top of your circle you will have -
(from right to left) ch 2 + dc, 2 dc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 2 dc, 2 dc.

Now, slip stitch in the next stitch, single crochet in the next three stitches and then hook two single crochets in the fourth, repeating -
*1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in 4th st*
around the rest of the body ending with a slip stitch into the last single crochet stitch, a slip stitch in the chain two space and a slip stitch in the first double crochet.
To finish the top of the owl, you will hook a half double crochet in the next stitch, double crochet, chain one, double crochet in the next stitch, half double crochet in the next stitch, slip stitch in the next two stitches, half double crochet in the next stitch,  double crochet, chain one, double crochet in the next stitch, half double crochet in the next stitch and finishing with a slip stitch in the next stitch.

hdc, dc + ch + dc, hdc, sl st, sl st, hdc, dc + ch + dc, hdc, sl st

Leave a nice long tail of yarn when you cut, for finishing. Pull the yarn all the way through the loop on your hook and pull tight. Using a yarn needle,

weave your tail through the back of your owl making your way up to an ear.

To make the ears into more of a point, run your needle through the 2 double crochets and pull tight, loop through and pull tight again. Then, weave your yarn over to the other ear and repeat.

For the eyes, make a magic ring with eight single crochets. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join and leave a long tail when you cut your yarn. Use the tail to stitch the eye in place. Choosing a dark color, make a french knot for the eye.
The beak is embroidered on with yarn.
When you are finished, weave in all of your loose yarn ends and cut them off.

FYI - I have removed the stitch count for each round because I did make a mistake in my counting (uh-oh). I will be refiguring those and will hopefully be putting them up soon. I do appreciate any feedback given about the pattern...

    3. Laura,
Thanks for posting this so cute owl. But I was wondering what is a "magic ring"? I even asked at the craft stores in my area and no one seems to know what it is. I would love to make one of these so please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks!

    5. Go to www.craftyminx.com and look for the crochet school. From there you can look up the video for crocheting in the round and she will show you how to do the magic circle. It's difficult to explain in a message.

  33. This is great! I found some free owl applique patterns on Ravelry, but none that I liked. I was super discouraged and figured I would have to find another applique that was not an owl for my baby cousin's hat I am making her for Easter. I stumbled onto your pattern on Tangled HAppy's blog and I am so excited!! So that was my slightly long winded way of saying, "This is great!! Thank you!!!".

  34. This is just too adorable! I've only made a few afghans so far, so I'm still fairly new, but I will definitely give this a try soon!!! Any thoughts on how or if this can be worked into a granny swuare for an afghan? I don't want to just stitch it on, but would rather make the owl as the centerand then finish it off into a square. Am I crazy? =)

  40. Nice! Thanks for sharing. I made ons, but i have one question. What do you mean in the fifth round by: Chain two and double crochet into the same space?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The chain two acts as the first double crochet when starting this row, so the chain two and a double crochet is the same as two double crochets in the same stitch.

  80. Well, now, isn't this just the cutest thing?!? I made one in white, lavender and pink, and she's adorable. The only change I made was to sew the french knot onto the eyeball before sewing the eyes to the owl...that way the end of the french knot (I actually used a knot from candlewicking), was hidden when sewing on the eyes.
    Thank you so much!

  114. I am new to crocheting and don't really understand the written instructions. Is there a video tutorial? I can't seem to find anything. If not would you be willing to do one? I understand if you can't. I know that's a lot to ask for.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hi Laura, Thanks for your work to make this cute owl pattern. I know how challenging it can be to communicate instructions. I have many years of experience, both writing and crocheting. I hope you will find this helpful.

May I suggest the following changes to make it clearer. [I have labeled the individual dc stitches instead of using the word, 'next'. I have also separated the steps with periods. Finally, I found putting 2 chains, instead of 1, between the last row double crochets allows a pointier ear tuft. Two stitches, one above the other, made with the needle bring out the point.]

"To finish the top of the owl, hook a half double crochet in the 2nd DC stitch. Double crochet, chain TWO, double crochet in the 3rd DC stitch. Half double crochet in the 4th DC stitch. Slip stitch in the next THREE SC stitches. Half double crochet in the 1st DC stitch. Double crochet, chain TWO, double crochet in the 2nd DC stitch. Half double crochet in the 3rd DC stitch and finish with a slip stitch in the 4th DC stitch."

  117. Laura, I am on pins and needles hoping I wasn't too presumptuous with my pattern suggestions. Sometimes I want to be helpful, but just sound 'bossy', at least that is what my first grade teacher told my mother over 50 years ago! I am loving the little owl I made from your pattern and have started several more. So far they are blind. I have lots of mother of pearl buttons I want to use when I can find the right size for eyes.
Happy Spring. At my house the flowers are blooming gloriously! diane

    1. Hi Diane,
Thank you for your comments. I am sorry that I haven't responded until now but I have been so busy lately. Unfortunately it's made me very neglectful of my blog. I do appreciate your help with my pattern (no, you're not being bossy in my eyes). I just haven't had a chance to do any crafting lately, which makes me a little sad, nor have I been able to think through what you have suggested. I am glad you like the pattern though. Do you have a blog or something where you show your crafts? I would love to see your owls...
Well, I hope you weekend is off to a wonderful start.
      Enjoy...
      Laura

  120. Sorry... There are so many comments! I was just hoping that there would be a revision coming for the eyes? I'm not versed in embroidery crochet, this would actually be my first attempt, so I have no idea where to start! Thanks so much!

Here are two different video tutorials on making french knots. It takes a little practice but is very easy once you get the hang of it.

      Good luck.

  124. Laura, this is such a cute owl, thank you so much for the pattern! I love the colors and his contrasting belly and, well, everything about it. I had a bit of trouble getting the ears to work for me so I modified it until I was satisfied (that's one of the great things about creativity, isn't it?) Here's my first finished test owl: http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/spexgirl/172794352/Owl_Pink_Test_Finished_medium.jpg

  135. Laura,
These are adorable, thank you! Thank you for going to all the trouble to figure out the pattern and then sharing it with us. They'll be great to sew on to the scarves I'm making everyone for Christmas this year - Sincerely, the poor college student who can't afford to buy patterns all the time and <3's free ones
